I have a business that is somewhat started. I want to get it incorporated, do I need a lawyer or no?
Question: I’m trying to save up some money while starting up a new small business. I think there are Web sites where you can incorporate your business all by yourself. Is that true or should I hire an attorney? My business inventory is rather extensive and I have a lot of money invested in this company.
Response: Your comments about your business investment and extensive inventory both indicate that you should move forward quite cautiously. It would be very wise for you to consult with a lawyer who has already helped many other new business owners. This small business expert can help you decide such things as where to incorporate your company and how to best position your products and services in the marketplace.
While you may not want to spend any more on “start-up costs,” hiring an attorney can be a smart investment that will protect you from many false steps and errors that could cost you plenty later on. You’re always free to inform an attorney when you first meet that you’d just like to consult with her on an “as needed” basis when other legal questions arise.
