Labor Laws Hours

When an employer seeks to utilize its employees in the performance of its objectives, the employer may be subject to the federal labor laws regarding employment. The federal labor law hour laws are located in the Fair Labor Standards Act, also known as the "FLSA." The FLSA requires that employees receive at least minimum wage and are not permitted to work more than forty hours unless overtime pay is provided. In addition, the FLSA indicates that work nor requested is work time to be paid for. For instance, if an employee's shift is over and the employee continues to work in order to complete and assignment, this time is deemed as work time and is compensable. Moreover, the FLSA indicates that if an employee is waiting for work, such as a fireman waiting for an alarm, this time is also worktime. In addition, if an employee has to remain on call on the employer's premises, this is deemed worktime. Finally, travel time may be compensable worktime if it is a requirement of the job and the travel is required in order for the employee to perform his or her job.
